I don’t know what happened – maybe they added some categories, or something, but the sales rank change is pretty huge, and the top-10 lists are crazy cool! Top 10 in Fatherhood?!?! That’s awesome!
Every Step Gets Me Halfway Closer
First thing in the morning, the corrected galley ships back across the country, and so does my last chance to change anything in the book. I think I’m okay with that. You know, except for the whole part about wondering if anything in it is really any good, and when are people going to figure out that I’m really not a writer.
Jeez, creative types, you know?
Anyway, I saw a draft press release today as well, which was a little surreal. Someone actually spent time writing something up to extol the virtues of my creation. It was cool, though. And soon, the back cover text and art will show up, and finally some bound galleys which are for handing out to people who are cool enough to quote on the cover. Like I know a whole bunch of those.
Actually, I storta do. I’m really hoping I can get copies to Wil, and Leo Laporte, and Adam Savage, and Phil Plait, and maybe Peter Sagal. They are all geeky dads, and would hopefully find something interesting in there. Plus, they’re all geek icons!
And as you read this, it’s t-minus three months (or something like 13 weeks!) until the on-sale date. I feel like a stranger in a strange land with all this, but there’s no way I’m turning around now.

The Galley Rides Home
Just mentioning that I’ve got the galley that is the last time I can make any changes to the book. After this, it’s a gold master!
We’re Getting Closer All the Time
In a little over three months, GeekDad: Awesomely Geeky Projects for Dads and Kids to Share will hit the shelves (both real and virtual), and the publishing process continues at a frenzy. Last night, I received the first galley – basically a laser-printed copy of the book with the final formatting. I have a week to make any last-minute tweaks or edits, so I’m spending all my free moments reading the thing one more time. I have to say I enjoyed going through the introduction section, which was mostly written nearly 16 months ago. The prose feels fun and breezy, and hopefully very readable. I get more excited every day!
And the final formatting looks great! You’ll notice a row of little robots at the top of the website here – those come from the final book formatting, as does the use of my new favorite font, Armada Light. More to come as the day gets closer!
Updating the Website
We’re knocking down a couple walls, adding some skylights, and hopefully getting this thing ready for the launch of the book, which is only THREE MONTHS AWAY! Hope you like it.

I’ve been terrible about keeping this updated, but the book is just about done! Just a few illustrations left and then I’ll send it all off to the publisher. I’ve seen proposed cover art, and I LOVE it! This is so exciting! Here’s a little sneek!

Niles hills on 3/7/09
I’m decently over 5k words today, and with a generalized goal of 50K words, I’m telling myself that it means I’m 10% done.
Not really, of course. This has all been revising parts of the proposal and getting my head around the orgnization of the book and the new writing program I’m using (scrivener, it’s awesome – thanks Andy Ihnatko!). And I know some of the sections are going to require a bit of practical proof of concept testing. But still, I’M WRITING AND IT FEELS GOOD!
